This year (2015) celebrates the very first ascent of the Matterhorn (4,478m/14,692ft) which was on July 14, 1865. It just so happens that July 14 is also my birthday, but I was born just a few years later! 😉
The Matterhorn is divided by the countries of Switzerland and Italy. It is one of the highest mountains in the Alps and Europe. The four steep faces, rising above the surrounding glaciers, face the four compass points and are split by the Hörnli, Furggen, Leone and Zmutt ridges. The mountain overlooks the Swiss town of Zermatt to the north-east and the Italian town of Breuil-Cervinia to the south.
I summited the Matterhorn via the Hörnli ridge on August 5, 2011
